About us
Solicitation requests proposals are accepted for: (1) CREST centers; (2) partnership supplements applied to existing CREST awards; (3) HBCU Research Infrastructure for Science & Engineering (HBCU-RISE) awards; and (4) supplements applied to SBIR/STTR Phase IIA awards for diversity collaboration with existing CREST and HBCU-RISE projects. These supplemental proposals are administered by and co-funded with the NSF Directorate for Engineering, in the Division in Industrial Innovation and Partnerships (ENG/IIP).
One postdoctoral fellow, 8 graduate students, 5 undergraduates, 8 high school teachers and 5 high school students, particularly members of the underrepresented minorities will be selected, supported financially and trained each year. The project will thus have a significant impact on the number of minority students trained and who obtain degrees in marine and environmental sciences. The students will be involved in research projects that are potentially publishable, and will thus contribute to the theoretical and empirical knowledge in marine environmental science. Research results will be presented at scientific meetings, published in peer-reviewed journals, and disseminated widely via a newsletter that will be published annually, internet, and seminars. By working with high school teachers to infuse marine environmental science into the high school curricula, the Center will have a positive impact on >200 students in the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Research results will be made directly available to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service, who are among our collaborators in this grant. The results will also be used to enhance undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the scientists who are involved in the project at UMES, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, UMCES-IMET and Morgan State University thereby impacting more students than are directly supported by the Center.
