LA-SiGMA REU: Interdisciplinary Research Experiences in Materials Science

View this Opportunity's Website this link takes you to a different website

Academic Level: Undergraduate Students

Description: Research experiences in electronic materials, energy materials, biomolecular materials, and cyberinfrastructure

The LA-SiGMA REU provides an ideal setting for the student to become familiar with interdisciplinary research. With research groups exploring correlated (1) electronic materials, which show promise as new materials for the design of molecular computers, microelectronics, and high-density recording media; (2) energy materials, which show promise as catalysts, advanced materials for the storage and release of hydrogen, and electrochemical cells and capacitors that store and deliver electrical energy; and (3) biomolecular materials, which can provide encapsulation, delivery, and release of therapeutics, to specified targets, the participants work on cutting edge research in Materials Science.

The students learn how to use the most current cyberinfrastructure tools with individually designed training sessions targeted to their specific degree of preparation. In addition, since many research groups collaborate with international researchers, REU students are exposed to how international collaborations work.

This program involves 30 students, 5 at each institution. Each student receives a stipend of $4,500, free housing in university dormitories, and up to $400 in travel.
