Academic Level: Undergraduate Students

Description: The program provides three weeks of classroom, field, and laboratory work to build technical, scientific, communications and ethics skills with guest and mentor lectures followed by a 2-day research cruise aboard the R/V Savannah. During the final five weeks of the program, students will be actively engaged in research projects at Savannah State University, the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Georgia Tech, or Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary in Savannah. Students will keep a research log, develop a seminar presentation, and submit a formal written research report.

Sample research areas include:

' Field, microscopic, and molecular research to find and quantify species of harmful algae and bacteria.
' Organic contaminant analyses in coastal air, water, sediment, and biological tissues.
' Coastal and ocean engineering studies related to movement of water, sediments, and contaminants in aquatic environments or remotely-operated underwater vehicle design and operation.
' Ecological studies and educational material development at Grays' Reef National Marine Sanctuary using acoustic tagging of keystone fish species.
' Field studies of a local bottlenose dolphin population to investigate community, social, population, and foraging ecology.
' Field and laboratory ecological and culture studies of salt marsh and coastal invertebrates, fishes and microorganisms.
