Description: Biological invasions represent one of the most pressing conservation issues of our time. Population genetics can provide a powerful forensic tool for understanding the geographic distribution of invasive species, including the history of invasion and the likely sites of origin within the native range. With the rise of global commerce and biogeographic similarities, China and the southeastern United States have become a major conduit for exchange of species that have become invasive in their respective introduced habitats. With funding from the National Science Foundation's Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) program, we have established a collaboration between researchers in the U.S. and southeast Asia to study the ecological genetics of invasive species. The title of the project is "Genetics of Invasive Species Exchanged Between the Southeastern U.S. and China, Taiwan and Hong Kong."
