Description:
The Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research (MCUR) promotes and facilitates research experiences for undergraduates. The University of Maryland, College Park has placed faculty-student mentor relationships and undergraduate research among its top priorities. In keeping with the importance placed on undergraduate research, the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Studies founded MCUR as a resource for both students and faculty members. Located on the second floor of McKeldin Library, MCUR is the key resource and reference point for on- and off- campus research opportunities.

Students can use MCUR to find research opportunities that best match their skills. MCUR can help students find mentors, enabling them to develop meaningful professional relationships in their field of interest. MCUR also partners with other offices on campus to help students engaged in research, offering services such as workshops on writing and preparing for graduate school.

Faculty members can use MCUR to find top undergraduate students to assist them with their research projects. MCUR also supports faculty by providing a venue for them to share the ways in which they incorporate research into the curriculum.

What Do We Do?

MCUR sponsors four programs to foster undergraduate research: Maryland Student Researchers, Maryland Summer Scholars, Undergraduate Research Day, and the Summer Seminar Series.

Maryland Student Researchers is a database to which faculty post research opportunities. Students interested in research can find projects by searching the database and responding directly to the faculty member whose project they want to undertake. All faculty members are encouraged to post research opportunities, so there are listings in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts as well as the sciences and engineering.

Maryland Summer Scholars is a highly competitive program which provides approximately 25 outstanding students each year the opportunity to spend their summers working closely with faculty mentors on scholarly research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars receive a $3,000 grant for the summer. Students who are awarded a grant earn a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, and other awards. Many former recipients of the award have transformed their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their senior year. Applications are due in March of each year. Students may apply if they have completed a full year of coursework and will be registered in the fall semester.

Undergraduate Research Day provides an opportunity for students to share their research with the campus community. Held in April each year, Undergraduate Research Day showcases the research, scholarship, and artistic endeavors of UMD undergraduates. Students may present any work they completed as part of a course, internship, or program. In 2012, 388 students shared their work with the community. The event is open to the public.

The Summer Seminar Series hosts workshops which offer valuable advice on applying for graduate school, performing research ethically, featuring research experiences on a resume, presenting at conferences, and competing in national scholarship competitions. All students are invited to attend.
