About us
Students will be housed together at Mitchell College and will be bused all together to the nearby University of Connecticut, Avery Point in Groton, CT, which currently hosts Mystic Aquarium's marine science labs as well as collaborative partner UConn's Department of Marine Sciences. The project will connect undergraduate students with established research mentors to investigate how global change affects marine animals and their ecosystems. Students will be offered a broad range of mentored research topics designed to support their investigation of the overarching question: How do environmental stressors affect the physiology, behavior, and ecology of phytoplankton and marine animals in relation to the marine ecosystem? All students and mentors will be located at the same site for research and will travel to Mystic Aquarium together (short 9 mile ride) for group professional development seminars, working lunches and interaction with Aquarium resources that will reinforce the scientific theme through animal and ecosystem exhibit observations and interactions, job shadows, demonstrations of exhibit messaging and science communication for the public. The REU will culminate in presentations at the Aquarium for both scientific and public audiences.
