Description:
The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium is committed to broadening participation in coastal sciences. The Coastal Science Fellowship for Underserved Undergraduates will allow students to work with scientists, K-12 educators, extension professionals or law-and-policy specialists.

Coastal science fellows will learn how coastal resources are managed, gain hands-on experience in research, outreach and/or education, and learn about potential career paths. The fellowship aims to provide real-world experience to better prepare fellows to enter the workforce or pursue a graduate degree.

Fellows will complete the fellowships on the Alabama or Mississippi coast, and will work with mentors to develop fellowship projects that interest and challenge them. Topics may include fisheries, aquaculture, community resilience, habitat restoration, coastal tourism, environmental literacy, workforce development and other issues of importance to coastal ecosystems and the people who depend on them.

Eligibility: MASGC seeks to involve students from groups that are historically underrepresented in sciences. Current juniors and seniors from MASGC institutions, as well as any public or private four-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Alabama and Mississippi, may apply. MASGC welcomes students who have overcome educational or economic disadvantage and/or personal or family circumstances that may complicate their continued progress in scientific careers.

Fellowships will be 400 hours. Some work may be performed remotely. The start date is somewhat flexible.

Each fellow will receive an $8,000 stipend for 400 hours of fellowship work ($20/hour). Applicants must arrange their own lodging. Please visit our website to learn more and apply!
