Graduate Students (Masters)
Graduate Students (PhD)

Description:
Bridge Programs invite promising senior undergraduates or bachelor degree recipients in the physical sciences to participate in one-to-two year transitional graduate programs. Some transition programs are post-baccalaureate programs that provide research experience, advanced coursework, mentoring, and coaching to prepare a graduate school application while others are traditional PhD programs.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Bridge Program mission is to strengthen the chemical sciences in the United States by increasing the number of underrepresented students who receive doctoral degrees in chemical sciences. Therefore, applications are encouraged from Black, Latinx, American Indian, Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Eligibility:

- U.S. citizens or permanent residents

- bachelor degree recipient in the physical sciences (chemistry, chemical engineering, geoscience, physics, or closely related fields)

- Not have a PhD

- not have accepted a graduate admission offer in the current academic year (Submit an application even if you are waiting to be notified about acceptance into a graduate school program)

ACS is creating sustainable transition programs and a national network of doctoral granting institutions to mentor students to successfully complete PhD programs. The project incorporates strong evidence about support structures that predict academic success of underrepresented ethnic and racial minorities, and establishes links between minority serving institutions and doctoral granting institutions through research activities, collaboration, and personal contact.

Since many of today's doctoral students will become tomorrow's academic, industrial and government leaders, educating more underrepresented racial and ethnic minority PhDs will have a multiplicative effect in educating and inspiring students at all stages in the system and will help address persistent disparities.
