Offered by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), Semester by the Sea is designed for undergraduate students and post-bacs to spend a fall and/or spring semester immersed in marine studies while in residence at the Stony Brook Southampton campus.

The fall program offers students intensive studies of the diverse marine habitats of eastern Long Island including bays, estuaries, salt marshes, rocky intertidal zones, dunes, beaches, tidal flats, and the open ocean, as well as of current environmental issues related to these ecosystems. Students also explore historic and contemporary maritime cultures and traditions of the Northeast.

The spring program offers additional opportunities for courses in marine science, conservation, and maritime studies.
