Description: The NIH-funded Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) Program at the University of Chicago is an opportunity for postdocs in the biological sciences to combine a high-quality postdoctoral research experience with a mentored teaching and training experience at two local partner institutions. Participants will work with a faculty Research Mentor at the University of Chicago, in order to develop research-related skills, and with faculty Teaching Mentors at partner institutions, in order to experience classroom teaching and pedagogical training. Additional didactic activities and training are also part of a specialized curriculum through the Institute for Future Academics.
The IRACDA Program:
Year 1: 100% at UChicago: Lab research with Research Mentor to establish research project, Orientation, Introduction to partner institutions, Chicago Center for Teaching course, Ethics/RCR, Mentoring and DEI training (certificate courses), Individual Development Plan (IDP) and Teaching Development Plan Year 2: Mentored Teaching Experience and Teaching Workshop at partner schools; Research, Mentor a summer research student, and RCR at UChicago Year 3: Co-teach a course at partner schools; Research, Grantwriting workshop, Mentor a summer research student, and RCR at UChicago Year 4: Design and teach new course at partner schools; Identify and apply for grant funding; Research, Submit a manuscript for publication, Mentor a summer research student, Develop a Teaching Portfolio and Teaching Statement for academic job applications at UChicago Year 5: If necessary, continue postdoc training and research, Search for a faculty position, Application and Interview preparation, Complete research project, and mentor a summer research student at UChicago.
