Description:
The Isbell Biodiversity Lab at the University of Minnesota is hiring multiple early-career research interns to assist with ecological field work at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR) located in East Bethel, MN. Recent high school graduates, undergraduate students and post-baccalaureates are all encouraged to apply. The Isbell lab has several ecological research projects that consider the effects of biodiversity and global changes on grassland, forest, and oak savannah plant communities.

The research interns will work as a team under the supervision of the Isbell Lab manager but have the opportunity to interact with the larger scientific community at CCESR. This community includes staff, interns, graduate students, postdocs, professors, and research scientists. Interns also have the opportunity to participate in a summer research program that includes developing, conducting, and presenting an independent research project with mentorship from a member of the Isbell Lab. This research program additionally provides professional development workshops and seminars to help with career discernment.

Position responsibilities include establishing and maintaining field experiments, sampling plants and soils, sampling and maintaining a network of trail cameras, and recording data and metadata. Most of the work will be outdoors. Day-to-day tasks can be broken down into the following categories:

50% Collect data: Collect, measure, and archive samples of plants, seeds, and soils; collect and manage pictures from trail cameras; measure environmental variables including light, soil moisture, and temperature

40% Establish and maintain experiments: Deploy and maintain experimental infrastructure; remove weeds and plants

10% Participate in the summer research program or assist with additional research projects: Design, conduct, and present an independent research project; attend professional development workshops and seminars. Participation in the summer research program is optional. Interns who choose not to participate in the program will assist with additional research projects under the discretion of the supervising lab manager.
